Suzuki Jimny to Return as Next-Generation Gypsy in India: Report

The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy had been around in India for almost 35 years before the brand decided to pull the plug on the famed off-roader, recently. For hardcore enthusiasts, the discontinution of Gypsy came with a wave of nostalgia and heartbreak. However, all of that could change, sooner than expected. According to media report ,Suzuki could soon launch the Jimny as the next-generation Gypsy in India.

The Suzuki Jimny, which is currently in its fourth-generation, was launched in Japan last year. Internationally, the Jimny comes with two engine options – a 660cc, turbocharged, 3-cylinder petrol engine and a 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder petrol engine. In terms of the gearbox, there’s an option between a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission. Also, the compact SUV only comes with a three-door setup, but Suzuki could develop a longer wheelbase version with a five-door configuration for the Indian market. However, the true essence of the Gypsy still lies in the three-door format.

Ever since the launch of the Jimny, rumours of it arriving to India have been ripe. However, this latest report does seem to point towards the Jimny finally making its way to the Indian market. This latest development will come as welcome news for customers looking to buy a rugged, capable and relatively compact SUV for some serious mud plugging.
