Lexus RX450h F Sport Review

L is a letter than one can associate easily with Luxury. And when you speak of Luxury, there is a car brand which starts with L and has just made its entry into the Indian market. Yes, we are talking about the all new Lexus RX 450h. It is more than what meets the eye? Let’s find out!

How does it look?

Lexus might have been a bit late to the Indian party but they have come all guns blazing with a futuristic Hybrid vehicle. There is no denying the fact that the RX 450h is a looker. The RX’s design sets a strong statement and helps the SUV grab eyeballs everywhere it goes. Dominating the front end of this hybrid Lexus is a massive chrome framed honeycomb grille. Move over from the grille and you will notice the sharp angular LED headlamps that feature distinctive L-shaped DRLs. Turn to the side and the first thing you will notice is the slung back tail that just hangs gracefully. The 18-inch alloys do look a bit small in the overall context of the car and is not very aesthetically pleasing. However, that aids a lot in the ride comfort- more on that in the driving section.

Hows it on the inside?

Things are nice and fresh even on the inside as well. You get red leather everywhere you look along with aluminium, wood and chrome trim pieces. The front seats of the Lexus RX450h quite comfy and offer good bolstering. One can move them in 10 different directions while heating/cooling them whenever needed. Prominently placed on the dashboard is a 12.3-inch infotainment display which looks premium and upmarket. You can control the display with the Remote Touch Interface (RTI) controller which might remind you of your computer’s mouse. Sound coming from the 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system deserves a special mention here and is definitely one of the best sounding music system that I have heard in a long long time.

Whats under the hood?

Under the bonnet, petrol and electric power make up the hybrid drive system. The drive system combines a 262bhp petrol V6 mated to a pair of electric drive motors that put out 123Kw (167bhp). Total combined power is 313hp. The combustion engine also makes a decent amount of torque but, most of its 335Nm is delivered at a high 4,700rpm Lexus claims that the RX450h will accelerate from 0-100kmph in 7.7 seconds and that the hybrid SUV can go all the way upto 220 click an hours. Taking care of the transmission is a CVT gearbox which keeps on optimising different ratios. It works surprisingly well in and around the city. Since it is a hybrid and a has a 123Kw electric motor, pickup is instant and lag free and the car RX feels quite nimble getting of the line. You can also see information about the hybrid tech and its energy regeneration in real time through the Hybrid System Indicator. The air suspension coupled with 18 inch rims in a high 65 tyre profile aid the overall ride comfort. However, you can also stiffen things up in the Sport + mode but the SUV feels more at home in the normal mode.

Shall I buy one?

At Rs 1.07 crore ex-showroom (Delhi), the RX 450h competes with the Jaguar F-Pace, Porsche Macan and even the Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence. Now, we have driven all these cars in the past one month and can assure you that each of them have very distinct characters. While the Jag will appeal to conventional buyers who still haven’t accepted the hybrid vehicle concept, the RX450h is focused towards a more modern day buyer. While not as dynamic as its European rivals, the Lexus RX 450h would ensure that you will stand out in the crowd with your “Green Quotient’ on point!
