Indian conglomerate Mahindra acquired the Italian design house last year and now it intends to lead Pininfarina in a direction where it will start designing and making supercars rather than just designing for others. We hear that Pininfarina is now turning its attention to designing and building an electric supercar.
Mahindra chairman Anand Mahindra has been quoted to have said, “Pininfarina is a brand in and of itself. You don’t mess with something that’s working. Among Pininfarina’s aspirations now that it’s part of our group is not simply to design for other brands, but to design their own car, which is something they never had until now.”
Pininfarina had brought the H2 Speed hydrogen-powered concept car to 2016 Geneva Motor Show and Mahindra is already in the electric car segment with the e2o and recently expanded their range in India with the eVerito. Designing and building an electric supercar will be more challenging for both companies compared to what they have been doing so far. But given the drive that Mahindra has and the proven design expertise that Pininfarina possesses, it won’t be too long before we get to see a running prototype.
