BMW-X1_2013_1600x1200_wallpaper_55BMW introduced the X1 in India with an eye on the compact SUV market, but the competition has not let the Germans rest on their laurels. Thus, we have the revamped (or 2013 model) X1 – with more oomph and edgier looks to appeal to a wider audience. The cosmetic changes include a new tripartite air intake, which is a feature that is shared by all the X models, a new fog lamp layout to add a bit of width to the look and the most prominent of all the exterior changes are the new design xenon headlights with chrome garnish and twin circular rings with LED accents for that classic BMW look. There is also a sleeker ORVM, with some changes on the inside too. But is it worth the money?

BMW-X1_2013_1600x1200_wallpaper_48Once you step inside the face-lifted X1, you realize how the changes continue on the inside as well. It’s hard to miss them at first, as these changes are minimal, but there are new colour tones as well as an addition of chrome, which we liked in particular. There were also additions to the trim options, but the feel is very much the same. The 2.0 diesel engine purrs to a quiet start but we are quite familiar with it – it’s the same one used in the 320d, X3 20d and the 520d. It is a versatile engine that offers both great performance and good fuel economy as well. The four cylinder, 1995cc diesel engine generates 184 hp at 4000rpm and 380Nm of torque between 1750-2750rpm.

BMW-X1_2013_1600x1200_wallpaper_37It can go from 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and while achieving all this, it also manages to return an ARAI certified average fuel economy of 17 kms to the litre! Fitted with an 8 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifts, the X1 is a blast to drive, especially with the improved package. The only gripe that you could pick is the pick-up initially is a tad slow, but it really zooms out after the initial few seconds. There is a marked improvement with the steering of the X1 as well, which feels light and handled perfectly well in all types of terrain. Even the old X1 felt at home on the highway, city roads as well as off-roading – but the revamped version just does it so much better. The earlier X1 also had some issues with a jarring ride quality, especially on city roads, but the newer avatar tempts you to step on the pedal and really let yourself loose!
