BMW X1 xDrive 20d M Sport Review

What is it?

Facelifted M Sport variant of the BMW X1. Comes with AWD(xDrive) tech along with a 2.0- litre transversely mounted diesel engine.

How does it look?

If you have spent some time with the earlier X1 or have seen it in detail, the first thing you’ll realise is that this one looks more masculine, SUV-ish which is a good thing especially in our market (we loooooove SUV’s). In my opinion, the front end of the new X1 is the best and the most picturesque angle. The M Sport spec bumper looks jaw-y and brawny and the family kidney grille makes sure that you do not mistake it for anything else other than a BMW. Yes, the car has grown taller as well by 53mm in terms of the spec sheet and it’s not just all clever designing. Overall, it’s a good departure from the old hatchback-on-stilts saga.

Once inside, the first thing that I caught my attention was the M badging on the steering wheel which is pretty nice and chunky to hold as well. Even the key fob, door panels get the M badging and there are 18-inch M Spec alloy wheels as well. Rest of the cabin looks very modern BMW-ish and you get a nice 8.8-inch display for the i-Drive infotainment system which can show a number of things like real time power and torque usage figures as well as your fuel efficiency and driving patterns.

The front seats and wide and comfortable and are comfortable for long distances. Space at the back has improved as well and is best suited for 2 adults. The panoramic sunroof does improve the feeling of space too.

How does it drive?

Under the hood of the second generation X1 is a 2.0-litre diesel pot which is good enough to produce 190bhp of power along with 400NM of torque. It feels quite relaxed and linear in terms of power delivery and there is a wave of torque that you are rolling on most of the time. It has been mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox which does shifts through the cogs pretty smoothly, however, there were a some jerky takeoffs especially in bumper to bumper peak hour traffic. Overall, as mentioned above, the term ‘linear’ describes this engine best. You get three drive modes- Comfort, Eco Pro & Sport. As you can make out from there names, Eco Pro cuts down on power and is a boon if you are looking to extract the most of out of that litre of fuel.

The gearbox shifts up eagerly as well, further helping the cause. Comfort mode is basically normal mode and everything (steering, suspension, gearbox) feels nice and comfy. Put it in Sport and the steering weighs up a notch, adding a bit of confidence once you wanna dart into corners. The suspension setup is on the softer side which means you can easily glide over potholes. Push in hard into corners and there is a slight bit of a body roll which is a reminder of the fact that the car is best suited for long distance cruising, especially with that great FE figure( around 15-17kmpl on highways).

Should I buy one?

If you are looking to upgrade from your C Segment sedan, the second gen X1 fills most of the boxes right. A comfortable ride setup, efficient diesel engine along with decent boot space and ground clearance makes the X1 a good touring car and a great overall package!
