2017 BMW 520d Luxury Line Review

What is it?

The 2.0-litre diesel variant(most selling) of the 2017 5’er which was launched in India earlier this year.

How does it look like?

Let’s start from the front- for a layman, it would be very difficult to differentiate between the 7 series and the new 5- the chunky headlamps, front kidney grille, everything looks very much alike. It’s only when you move to the side, you can notice that it is pretty short in length compared to its long wheelbase sibling.

How is it on the inside?

It’s a total tech fest inside the new 5 series. The 520d Luxury Line comes with a fully-loaded i-Drive system with touchscreen, gesture control, touch pad and click-wheel operation. There are digital dials, 360deg surround cameras, hands-free parking, four-zone climate control and the seats have been finished in  ‘Dakota’ leather. You also get paddle shifters, adaptive LED headlamps and a sunroof. The cherry on the cake and the real party trick is the Smart key which comes straight from the 7 Series. You get autonomous parking, pre- airconditioning and other MID features in the key which come in handy many a times. Space at the back is not bad at all. Although the new Mercede Benz E Class is the benchmark in terms of rear seats space, the new 5 isn’t a bad car to be chauffeur driven in as well.

How does it drive?

Under the hood of 520d is the same 2.0-litre diesel mill which has been borrowed from the 3-series facelift and new X1. It is good enough for 190bhp of power and 400Nm of torque. You can select between three driving modes- Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport. Eco Pro makes sure that you extend the most out of even litre of fuel whereas Comfort works best for day to day driving. Since the 520d also gets adjustable dampers, selecting the comfort mode makes sure that you glide over most city potholes. However, the ride can feel a bit floaty at higher speeds and switching to ‘Sport’ makes more sense when you feel like extracting all of the 400NM of torque. Dart it into a corner or two and you’ll realise how tremendously the ride quality has improved in the new 5 series. A lot of critics were a little skeptical about the earlier generation’s (F10) driving dynamics and I am happy to report that that issue has been addressed in the new 5. The suspension feels more agile now, the steering communicates better with the driver and to simply put it- you get that driving pleasure that BMW’s are known to offer!

Verdict

The new 5 Series offers a heavy dose of tech on the inside, brings back the ‘sheer driving pleasure’ that BMW’s have always been known for and even doesn’t lose out on the ‘comfortable sedan’ factor.  The 2.0-litre diesel variant that we tested is pretty frugal too and offers a full tank range of almost 700 kms which means lesser fuel stops as well. So if you are looking for an everyday luxury sedan which you can be driven around in and can get behind the wheel yourself over the weekends, the new BMW 5 Series makes a lot of sense!
