‘Electric’ is the current theme at every Auto show throughout the world and Indian carmaker Mahindra is planning to amp up its electric car portfolio with two new EVs lined up for the upcoming year.
According to an online report by NDTV CarandBike, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra said, ‘Our first new electric car will come by 2018 and the second one will be launched by the end of 2019 and we are very excited for both.’
Mahindra’s current electric vehicle portfolio for the Indian market includes the e20+, eVerito and the e-Supro. These two new additions lined up for next year will make Mahindra’s electric lineup the biggest in the Indian market. The carmaker plans to invest a hefty sum of Rs.4000 crore for the same in our market.
The carmaker has not made it clear yet on whether it plans to convert it’s existing car portfolio into hybrid or electric. There have been speculations in the market of an electric Scorpio but there is no official confirmation on the same.
At present, the carmaker does about 100 Electric vehicles in a month and plans to increase this number to a 1000 units per month in the next six month and 5000 units per month by 2019. This strategy comes in line with the recent government planning of making India a fully electric car country by 2030. Realistically, it looks tough at the moment, however, with the increasing pollution levels in India and especially the capital, it is high time that the authorities start giving good incentives for hybrid and electric cars to both customers and carmakers.
