Japanese auto giant Honda has stopped selling its MPV- the Mobilio in India mainly due to poor sales. Mobilio was competing directly with Maruti’s Ertiga MPV. The car was first launched in India in 2014 and we can be certain about its discontinuation as Honda has not included the same in its revised price list post the Goods and Services Tax.
Under the hood of the Mobilio was the same 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol unit and the 1.5-litre i-DTEC unit. Both the engines were in the same state of tune as the Honda City and the new BR-V. Also, the launch of the BR-V has given the customers more options with the same chassis and engine options from Honda.
Ertiga has been doing well for Maruti on the other hand and it is a common sight in the commercial space as well. Honda can launch an updated Mobilio in the Indian market but there is no official word from the carmaker till date. Even if Honda decides to do so, they will have to price the same very aggressively to eat into the sales of Maruti’s Ertiga. The Indian market is turning out to be quite a tricky one for many foreign carmakers as we are all aware that Chevrolet recently shut down shop in India and their have been rumors about other car brands that havent been doing so well exiting soon.
Honda had even launched a race-inspired RS version of the Mobilio but unfortunately even that couldn’t do well. Stay tuned to Exhibit Auto for more such updates about from the Indian Industry.
