German luxury carmaker, BMW is all set to take on the mid-size luxury sedan segment on a roll by launching the new 2017 BMW 5 Series in India by the end of this month. The new 5 series will be a CKD product and the production for the same has already started at the company’s Chennai plant.
Mr. Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India said, “For many years, BMW 5 Series has been the undisputed leader of its segment and is an absolute success story. The all-new BMW 5 Series that will be launched this month has everything that is needed to take the Indian luxury car segment by storm. I would like to congratulate the Plant Chennai team for achieving this important milestone and we are extremely proud for the smooth start of production of the all-new BMW 5 Series.”
The new 5 series is not just a facelift and is a brand new car aesthetically and somewhat mechanically as well. We can strongly expect the new series to be launched with three engine options – one petrol (530i) and two diesel mills (520d & 530d). While the 530i will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit (similar to the 3 Series and GT), the 520d will house the frugal 2.0-litre diesel motor whereas the 530d will come with the torquey 3.0-litre diesel unit. All the three variants will be paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission with power being sent to the rear wheels. The 2.0-litre turbocharged motor in the 530i will be good enough for 252PS of maximum power and 350Nm of peak torque. The sales chart topping 520d will come with the tried and tested 2.0-litre turbo diesel with 190PS of max power and 400Nm of torque. The enthusiast-friendly 530d will be churning out 265PS of power along with a healthy 620Nm of torque. The 530 will also sport an M Sport kit which mainly includes cosmetic changes and some parts from its M range of cars.
Features like auto parking, wireless charging and hand gesture controls will be borrowed from the new 7 Series which seriously raises the technology quotient in this segment. A smart key which displays the fuel range, air conditioning controls and the parking system tech will also be made available with the new 5 Series.
When is it launching?
The new 5 series is supposed to be launched in the Indian market on the 29th of June. Prices are expected to start from around Rs. 50 lakh and go all the way up to Rs. 65 lakh for the range-topping 530d M Sport variant.
