The Ford Ecosport has been around for some time and has started showing its age. Ford India has plans to bring in the new model and now the facelifted version has been unveiled a couple of days ahead of its official North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The same facelifted version is expected to be launched in India in 2017. Our first impression? It looks great.
Not that a lot has changed in the new avatar of the Ecosport. Most of the exterior changes are limited to the front fascia, which now sports the Ford family face. The hexagonal grille, new headlamps and fog lamps and the completely revised front bumper gives the SUV a more confident look which is in line with the other off-roading heavy weights in Ford’s international line-up. The sides remain more or less the same and the only new revision is the new-design alloy wheels. But then again, we are checking out the US-spec version here. The alloy designs are likely to be different from these for the India-spec vehicle. For the US customers, Ford has chosen to take the spare wheel off the tailgate. However, the tailgate-mounted wheel of the current model is also likely to remain when the new version makes it to India.
The interior of the new Ford Ecosport is much different and far superior to what we are used to. The Ford Fiesta-ish dashboard has been chucked in favor of one with a more European design. The silver finished inserts have also been removed, with body-colored ones being given preference. The center console now features Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system. Now that’s something which we are really hoping to see in the India-spec model. Air vents have been pushed further down the dashboard to make room for the infotainment system. The US market will be getting an AWD version as well, which has evaded the Indian market until now and may continue to be kept way beyond our reach.
Ford India may not bring in any new engines or introduce mechanical changes when the facelifted Ford Ecosport is launched in the Indian market. But this facelift is more than ample to keep the compact SUV relevant and steady on the sales chart. As for the North American market, the Ford Ecosport is a crucial product which they call “is a perfect companion for those who believe in going small and living big”. The compact SUV will be available for US customers in a choice of four trims – S, SE, SES and Titanium. The Titanium trim comes loaded with a B&O Play audio system which packs 10 speakers and 675 watts. Sweet!
